The Land of Alabama introduces the six physiographic regions within Alabama and the natural resources that helped shape Alabama history. Visitors learn about each region through maps, natural specimens (such as fossils, minerals, and vegetation), and images provided by renowned nature photographer Beth Maynor Young. Examples of products made from Alabama resources include a prehistoric grinding stone, heart-pine flooring from Smith Hall at the University of Alabama, and a cast-iron fire hydrant made in Albertville. “The Story Begins in the Land,” a short film narrated by John C. Hall, summarizes the geologic forces responsible for creating Alabama’s tremendous natural diversity.
