World War I Backpack
When America entered World War I in 1917, Alabamians joined the rest of the country in sending troops and supplies. Patriotic campaigns encouraged people to support the war effort by becoming soldiers and aid workers, rationing food, and buying Liberty Bonds. Training bases were established in Alabama and thousands of American soldiers arrived in the state. Many soldiers lost their lives in battle, but many more lost their lives in the worldwide flu epidemic. Victory in 1918 ushered in a new era filled with prosperity and cultural change. Students will learn about the impact of World War I on Alabama through primary sources, activities, and hands-on materials.
