Civil War Backpack

The American Civil War, waged from 1861-1865, changed life in Alabama. Those living and working in Alabama were impacted economically, emotionally, and physically as casualties grew and an agricultural life dependent on enslaved labor ended. Students will use primary sources to investigate events before, during, and after the Civil War: Secession through Reconstruction. Primary sources include the Ordinance of Secession, 1861 Constitution, letters from soldiers, newspaper articles, and sharecropping documents from the Freedmen’s Bureau.
