ALABAMA ARCHIVES TO HOST BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENT
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 10:00AM-2:00PM

Montgomery, AL (02/03/2025) – The Alabama Department of Archives & History (ADAH) will host African Americans & Labor: The Lives They Built on February 8, 2025, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Admission is FREE.

Highlighting the 2025 National Black History Month theme, African Americans and Labor, this family event will feature activities for all ages, including a museum scavenger hunt, crafts, and special presentations that focus on communities and culture built by African Americans.

Historical topics of discussion will include types of labor, including professions in midwifery, agriculture, artisanship, education, and media, as well as the lives and communities they created.

An exhibit showcasing items from the ADAH’s collections will be on display, along with a selection of recently digitized historical news footage from the ADAH’s WSFA-TV collection. Jozettie’s Cupcakes and Can a Brotha Get a Slice will be on-site throughout the event. Local organizations, including the Freedom Rides Museum, Rosa Parks Museum, and the Alabama Center for Traditional Culture, will also be on-site.

1:30pm – African Americans and Labor: An Interview with Mary McInnis
               
McInnis was the first African American woman to serve as a USDA County Executive Director in Alabama,
                directing Greene County’s Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service.

The Alabama Department of Archives and History is the state’s government-records repository, a special-collections library and research facility, and home to the Museum of Alabama, the state history museum.
