ARCHIVES TO HOST ALABAMA IN THE MOVIES
SUMMER FILM SERIES
Montgomery, AL (07/01/2024) – The Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) is pleased to announce the 2024 schedule of its popular summer film series Alabama in the Movies. Screenings of three movies featuring Alabama connections will be held in the ADAH’s air-conditioned Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium July 11, 18, and 25, beginning at 6:00pm. Thursday, July 11 – Robin Hood (1973): This beloved Disney animated film tells the story of Robin Hood, the English folk hero who led a merry band of outlaws in Nottingham and Sherwood Forest against the corruption and excessive taxation of England’s Prince John. The Sheriff of Nottingham, Prince John’s henchman and Robin Hood’s main antagonist, was voiced by Alabama native Maxwell Emmett “Pat” Buttram. Family. Rated G.
Thursday, July 18 – Big Fish (2003): Filmed on location in Alabama, Big Fish explores the complexities of a frustrated son’s relationship to his father, a teller of tall tales. As Will Bloom attempts to distinguish fact from fiction in the stories of his father’s life, he begins to find meaning, and reconciliation, in his tales. Fantasy drama starring Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney. Rated PG-13.
Thursday, July 25 – My Cousin Vinny (1992): Cultures collide when two young New Yorkers are falsely accused of murder in Alabama, and a cousin of one of the boys, an inexperienced lawyer unfamiliar with Southern courtroom etiquette, comes to their defense. Comedy starring Joe Pesci, Marisa Tomei, and Ralph Macchio. Rated R.
The Alabama Department of Archives and History is the state’s government-records repository, a special-collections library and research facility, and home to the Museum of Alabama, the state history museum. It is located in downtown Montgomery, directly across Washington Avenue from the State Capitol. The Museum of Alabama is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 to 4:30.
