ARCHIVES TO HOST A CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY FAMILY EVENT
ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10 FROM 10:00 AM TO 3:00 PM
Montgomery, AL (01/22/2024) – On Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) will host African Americans and the Arts: A Black History Month Event. Admission is FREE.
Highlighting the 2024 National Black History Month theme, African Americans and the Arts, this family-friendly event will feature a museum scavenger hunt, crafts, book readings, and special presentations that share the stories of Black Alabamians and their contributions to the arts throughout history. A small exhibit with items from the ADAH’s museum and archival collections will be on view, along with screenings of recently digitized historical news footage from the ADAH’s WSFA-TV collection. Jozettie’s Cupcakes and the Can A Brotha Get A Slice food truck will be on site throughout the event.
Community partners who will participate with displays and activities include: Alabama Shakespeare Festival; Freedom Rides Museum; Hiztorical Visions Productions; League of Women Voters of Alabama; National Park Service; Rosa Parks Museum; and Thread My Needle.
Special Events Throughout the Day:
11:00am – A Reading of the children’s book Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut
1:00 pm – A Second reading of Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut
1:30 pm – A Panel discussion with River Region artists Michelle Browder, Tiiwon Siaway, and a representative of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival about African American art, its roots, and its importance. The program will be moderated by Kalonji Gilchrest, executive director of 21 Dreams Arts & Culture, located in Montgomery.

The Alabama Department of Archives and History is the state’s government-records repository, a special-collections library and research facility, and home to the Museum of Alabama, the state history museum. It is located in downtown Montgomery, directly across Washington Avenue from the State Capitol. The Museum of Alabama is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 to 4:30.
