Montgomery, AL (7/12/2023) – The Alabama Department of Archives & History (ADAH) will continue its 2023 Food for Thought lunchtime lecture series on Thursday, July 20, at 12 p.m. CT.  Dr. Todd Steury will present Black Bears: The Past and Present of Alabama’s State Mammal. The program will be held in the ADAH’s Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium in Montgomery. It will also be livestreamed on the ADAH’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Admission is FREE.

Dr. Steury’s presentation will focus on the historical presence of black bears in Alabama and the eastern United States. He will also share the research he has been conducting on Alabama’s state mammal over the past decade. The presentation will include many photographs of bears and detail the steps to take should you encounter one in the wild.

Dr. Todd Steury is the associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor of wildlife ecology in Auburn University’s College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment. His expertise is in carnivore ecology and conservation, predator-prey relationships, and statistics. Dr. Steury’s research on carnivore conservation has spanned various species, including red wolves in North Carolina, lynx in the western United States, and black bears in Alabama and the southeastern United States.
