ALABAMA ARCHIVES AND AFRICAN ATLANTIC GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY TO CONDUCT HISTORY & HERITAGE WORKSHOPS

Do you have a reunion coming up or are you interested in planning one for your family? Do you want to know how to go about tracing your roots? If so, the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) and the Alabama Chapter of the African Atlantic Genealogical Society (AAGS) have teamed up to offer a series of workshops just in time to assist you in preparing for your summer family reunion.  The workshop series, entitled “Preparing Your Family Tree for the Family Reunion,” will emphasize the unique aspects of African-American history and genealogy, and is designed to help both novice and experienced genealogical researchers discover their family histories and obtain adequate documentation to present at family reunions and gatherings. Each of the Saturday sessions will be held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History at the dates and times indicated below:

March 24, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon How to Begin Your Family Research
April 14, 1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. Using Federal Census Records in Genealogy Research
May 5, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon Locating and Using Local Government Records
May 26, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon How to Present Family Research Information at the Family Reunion

As seating for this workshop is limited, participants are advised to pre-register for all four workshops by March 21st or at least four days in advance of each individual workshop. The registration fee is $30 for all four sessions or $10 per session. This includes workshop materials and snacks. To register, call (334) 242-4363 or go on-line to . This workshop series is sponsored by the Friends of the Alabama Archives, a non-profit group which helps support the Alabama Archives, and the African Atlantic Genealogical Society Alabama Chapter, a non-profit group with emphasis on African-American research.

The Alabama Department of Archives and History is located at 624 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama directly south of the Alabama State Capitol. Directions are available on the ADAH website. The Alabama Archives is open to the public 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Saturday (Research Room closed on Mondays), and is closed on Sundays and all state holidays.
