60. Vulcan: Symbol of Alabama's Iron Industry
Birmingham, Jefferson County
Birmingham was founded in 1871 as an industrial center because the area was rich in coal, iron ore, and limestone,
all needed to make iron and steel. Birmingham became known as the "Pittsburgh of the South," though the iron
industry became less important in the late twentieth century. The statue of Vulcan is the largest cast iron sculpture in the
world and was designed by Giuseppe Moretti to represent Birmingham and Alabama in the 1904 World's Fair.
