Tuskegee, Macon County
In 1881, Booker T. Washington became the first principal of Tuskegee Normal School, later known as Tuskegee
Institute, and now Tuskegee University. Under Washington's leadership the school attracted many talented teachers,
such as Dr. George Washington Carver, and became one of the most celebrated colleges in the U.S.
